| A group of eight students recently returned from an immersion trip to the Blackfeet Reservation in Browning, Montana. The Blackfeet Reservation faces many challenges- 80% of the population is on welfare, 70% of the students come from single family homes, and drug abuse is rampant. For four days in March, eight Mullen students went by plane, train and automobile to De La Salle Blackfeet, a Christian Brothers School, and tutored fifty-seven, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Most of the students at DLSB experience disfunction in their home lives and see the school as a haven of stability and safety. Although the Mullen students felt sadness from the profound poverty, they left with a feeling of hope knowing this small Christian Brothers school is providing a place of comfort where true learning takes place. Thank you to Nick Ameluxen, Maggie Barrett, Katie Christensen, Kate Dewey, Kaitlyn Crump, Amy Palzack, Desi Raynor and Tess Whiteside for their courage to live simply, pray daily, and live the mission of a Lasallian School by serving the poor. |
